Sondu Clashes are Back: 3 Dead after Night Raid

In a distressing turn of events, the region of Sondu, situated along the Kisumu-Kericho border, has once again witnessed outbreaks of violence following a night raid that resulted in the tragic loss of three lives. The assailants also caused severe injuries and torched a house during their brazen attack.

The incident occurred in East Kadiang’a Location within the Upper Nyakach Division, sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting swift action to mitigate further flare-ups. A heavy police presence has been established in and around Sondu market and its surroundings, aimed at maintaining peace and quelling any potential escalation of violence.

In the aftermath of the attack, anti-riot police officers intervened to disperse agitated youths who had barricaded the Katito-Sondu road at Nyabondo junction earlier in the day. These measures were taken to prevent any disruptions and maintain public safety amidst the tense atmosphere.

Kisumu County Governor, Prof Anyang Nyong’o, has expressed deep concern and condemnation regarding the incident. He labeled the attack as “unfortunate,” especially given the imminent visit by President William Ruto to the region. Governor Nyong’o conveyed his dismay at the senseless acts of violence, revealing that gangs armed with bows and arrows had crossed the border from Kericho to launch the assault on innocent residents, resulting in the loss of lives and theft of cattle.

In a strongly-worded statement, Governor Nyong’o urged the national government to act swiftly, apprehending the criminals responsible for the heinous attack. He emphasized the necessity of delivering justice to the affected families and called for collective efforts to bring an end to such barbaric behavior. He stressed that the security and well-being of the community should remain paramount, urging unity and collaboration to address the root causes of this violence.

As the authorities work diligently to bring the culprits to justice and restore peace in the region, it remains essential for the community to stand united against violence and promote a culture of peace, harmony, and mutual respect. Only through combined efforts can they pave the way for a peaceful coexistence and a brighter, safer future for all.
